
Asthma is a condition where your airways start to narrow and produce extra mucus making it difficult to breathe at times. Asthma can also cause coughing, shortness of breath, a wheezing sound, and in severe cases be life threatening.
In some cases Asthma is a miner yet annoying situation however in other cases it can be severe and cause a life threatening asthma attack.
Asthma is not a curable condition. Asthma can only be monitored and checked by your doctor on a regular basis. Asthma is a condition that is constantly changing and evolving so it is important to discuss your symptoms on a regular basis with your doctor.
Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Pain or tightening of your chest
- Difficulty sleeping due to difficulty breathing
- A wheezing sound when exhaling (often observed in children)
- Severe coughing or wheezing that worsens when sick or treating a cold or flu.
What to look for to ensure your Asthma symptoms are not worsening:
- Increasing symptoms
- Increasing difficulty breathing
- Use of an inhaler more often
Specific situations one might have an Asthma flare up:
- Exercise- which may be worse when the air is cold and dry
- Occupational-triggered by workplace irritants such as chemicals, gases, mold, and dust particles
- Allergies- Such as pet dander, seasonal, dust, and common household allergens
